A Medical Director's Perspectives on Managed Care: Impact for the RCP

David M. Burns, MD Sunday, November 3, 1996

Reductions in health care costs and the shift to for profit health care is dramatically changing the processes of health care delivery. As a result a number of critical cost containment questions need to be answered in all health care systems. They include: * Are we using only the staff we need? * Is our staff as productive as possible? * Is everything we do necessary? * Can we improve the way we deliver care to lower costs? * Can we get the patient better faster to lower costs? * Can we keep the patient well to lower costs? The answers to these questions have reshaped respiratory care departments and placed them in competition with nursing departments for control and resources. Fewer therapists are needed, but they need higher level of skills and more authority, and productivity is not as important as utilization management.
