Connecting Your Department to the Inter/Intra-net

Intranets are becoming popular methods for entities to provide internal information to employees, while preventing it from being widely distributed to the public. A common use within the respiratory therapy department is electronic policy and procedure manuals. It is simple to maintain a central server within the department that can be changed whenever necessary. All clients that subsequently connect to the server will see the new information immediately, reducing the work required to update paper copies stored all around a hospital. Additional uses include distribution of staff minutes, memos, and organizational charts. Departments have also chosen to provide internet servers with access to online resources, such as the Virtual Hospital(R) at the University of Iowa, a source of several good training series. Other departments use internet servers to advertise open positions, recruit students, provide discussion groups, and provide pointers to additional information on other servers.
