Does Washington Really Care About Home Care?

Cheryl A. West, MHA Tuesday, November 5, 1996

The Medicare program views "Home Care' as two distinct benefits: HME and home health. The number of patients and the amount of services provided under the two benefits are rising rapidly. HCFA, in its attempts to stem the rise, is planning two very different remedies.

For the home health benefit HCFA is well on its way to crafting a PPS system of reimbursement. This could very well provide opportunities for the RCP. The HME benefit would be contained by more onerous Methods: competitive bid, inherent reasonableness criteria, and home oxygen concentrator reductions. The could prove very detrimental for RCPs working in the HME area. This presentation will elaborate on what might lie ahead for both of the home care benefits and the impact on the RCP.
