Quality Improvement in Pediatric Mechanical Ventilation - An Outcomes Approach

Perinatal-pediatric respiratory care practitioners contribute greatly to the quality of ventilatory care their patients receive. However, measurement and documentation of that quality of is often difficult to obtain. An outcome approach to quality improvement in pediatric mechanical ventilation monitors physiologic endpoints which directly result from the ventilatory strategy, equipment and monitoring a patient receives, as well as the resources required to reach that endpoint. Data is then used to assess and modify approaches to ventilatory care by diagnosis. Examples of patient outcomes related to mechanical ventilation will be discussed.
