Liquid Ventilation: From the Abyss to the Bedside

Jeanette Asselin, MS, RRT, Monday, December 8, 1997.

Medicine has made many advances in its ability to care for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) over the past 20 years. Even so, published mortality rates of ARDS still approach 50%. Liquid ventilation is one of the most promising new therapies for treating ARDS. This presentation will review the pathophysiology and sequence of lung injury in ARDS, the history and development of fluorocarbons, and the role of liquid ventilation in ARDS and other clinical conditions. Published animal and clinical studies of liquid ventilation will be reviewed as well as the status of current clinical trials.

AARC 50th Anniversary, December 6 - 9, 1997, New Orleans, Louisiana.
