Pulminary Negligence -- A Mock Trial
A L DeWitt, RTT, JD, Monday, December 8, 1997.
In a world of cost-reductions, short staffing, and hospital administrations looking for another place to cut, the onus is on the department manager and staff member to keep focused on providing excellent care. This presentation takes a real-life malpractice situation involving a critical pulmonary patient, and documents the numerous missed opportunities to save her life. The program also highlights actual trial testimony from the case, as well as selected deposition transcripts and exhibits.
The audience will ultimately decided if the defendants in this matter were negligent, and they will have an opportunity to ask questions of the therapist/actors who play the parts. A discussion on the general law of malpractice will conclude the session.
The object of the presentation is to show how missed opportunities and a lack of professionalism on the part of one therapist and one physician cost a human life, and resulted in a major medical negligence case.
