Star Trek Respiratory Care: Going Where No One Has Gone Before with Telemedicine

Michael W. Runge, BS, RTT, Sunday, December 7, 1997.

Today's health care continues to move from the in-patient setting to one outside of the Medical Center. With recent downsizing, many hospitals have chosen to have Respiratory Care Services provided by other allied health care practitioners. This action may result in patients not being able to have their respiratory needs adequately addressed since most other allied health care practitioners do not have the knowledge base which respiratory therapists possess. By utilizing Telemedicine, Respiratory Care Practitioners are able to bring their expertise to remote locations to augment patient care. This partnering with other hospitals and nursing homes may result in not only increased market share, but also greater control over the utilization of Respiratory Care services in the clinic or emergency room.
