The Practice of Routine Ventilator Checks

John W. Salyer, BS, RRT, Monday, December 8, 1997.

This lecture will review the practice of routine checking of patient-ventilator systems in the intensive care environment. A history of the development of this practice will be followed by a consideration of why we do ventilator checks, what constitutes a ventilator check, recent changes in practice about ventilator check frequency, and some speculations about the future of routine ventilator checks. Also included will be national survey data from multiple sources on ventilator check practices based on hospital type, size, and geographic region. Data on the impact of changing ventilator check frequency will be presented. We will also describe what is known about the regulatory literature regarding frequencies of checks. The financial impact of routine ventilator checks will also be assessed.

AARC 50th Anniversary, December 6 - 9, 1997, New Orleans, Louisiana.
