Reimbursement Issues in Acute Care

L. Lynn LeBouef, BSRC, RRT, RCP

Medicare fraud accounts for 10% of each health care dollar spent. The Operation Restore Trust initiative is well underway and is being investigated by the Office of Inspector General, F.B.I., U.S. Attorney's Office, Health Care Financing Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service, just to name a few. The Medicare definition of "fraud and abuse" as well as the consequences of violating Medicare guidelines will be discussed. A review of "covered vs. non-covered", as well as "routine" services and their implications to Respiratory Care managers will be discussed. Medications, supplies, and procedure charges will be reviewed.
