Five things I learned this year about cystic fibrosis.
John M. Graybeal, CRT
Dorothy H. Andersen of Columbia University first described "cystic fibrosis of the pancreas" in 1938. Aggressive treatment of the pulmonary complications in patients with CF previous centered on the delivery of inhaled bronchodilators and frequent sessions of chest physiotherapy, the old fashioned percussion and postural drainage. Only recent research has increased the median survival of patients with this disease. Important advances in the treatment of this disease will be discussed, including genetic treatment, the use of inhaled antibiotics, new drugs to decrease mucous viscosity, as well as improvements in therapy delivery systems.
