Five Things I Learned This Year about Computer Databases and the Internet

John Hannigan, MBA, RRT

The "five things I learned" about Computer databases and the Internet have been frozen as a snapshot in early fall. Using my experience as a respiratory therapist searching the Internet for information relevant to clinical problems, I share my tricks and tips learned along the way.

Include the name of the specialized discussion group and key words if searching a general World Wide Web (web) site such as

2. The number of links and kind of links to particular sites may give you clues as to its general reliability and authenticity.

3. Hutchinson's Internet Workbook for Health Professionals is a great site to start searches outside of respiratory care Others have organized web resources by categories: Hardin MetaDirectory at University of Iowa.

4. PUBMED is a free public link to the online version of Index Medicus. This resource is searchable and available from many web sites, including

5. The AARC's web site has well-organized links to state affiliates, related organizations, job postings, and a help-line. Using "subscriptions" to web pages via Windows 98 by Microsoft Corp. can keep you abreast of frequently changing news specific to respiratory professionals, educators, and leaders.

Examples, that may be used, include: searching for "job" on the RC_WORLD list; answering the question "What is BC/BS? Searching for Nova Scotia hospitals and the latest tips on great sites for information are discussed.

Many of the sites are linked on where information can also be found on subscribing, leaving respiratory care related lists such as RC_WORLD, RC_HELP, ccm-1, and asma-1.
