Getting Started in Respiratory Care Research: Bench Studies
Joseph L. Rau, PhD, RRT, FAARC Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia
This lecture discusses a type of research referred to as "bench research", within the context of the research symposium on different types of research strategies. Bench research is defined and differentiated from other types of research in respiratory care. Advantages and disadvantages with this type of research are presented. The relation of bench research to clinical practice and clinical studies is explored. The question of whether bench research is predictive of in vivo results is discussed and three examples showing that bench research can in fact be predictive of clinical results are offered from the aerosol research literature.
