Home Oxygen is Over Utilized
Gregg Spratt, RRT Rotech Medical Corporation, Kirksville, Missouri
In some patients, oxygen is ordered during an acute state and multiple consensus conferences have recognized the need to re-evaluate these patients after recovery. However, most patients utilizing home oxygen have a chronic, progressive illness in which the need for supplemental oxygen is life-long once established.
Although many are quick to point to over-utilization in acutely ill patients, few are willing to admit to concurrent under-utilization in other patient groups. Data would suggest that the need for home oxygen therapy might be even higher than current usage patterns reflect.
