Enhancing Clinical Effectiveness Through the Application Of a Quality Plan
Marta Tingdale, BCA, RRT, RN Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas
In our rush to manage the cost conscious health care world, we can become lost and forget the systematic methods that are available to us to assist in maintaining equilibrium in our departments and in our work environments. This lack of use of consistent practices can lead to a loss of the most important product of good respiratory care, which is quality. Quality can be defined many ways in respiratory care. It can be the collaboration for a care path on community-acquired pneumonia, or the development of a process for discharged to receive medications free for their asthma.
Putting a consistent quality model in place with all processes dealing with patient care will lead to consistently improved outcomes. Educating your employees on the process and allowing them to apply the principles of the process to the care they deliver will create synergism and results. Results are the key to the manager's ability to move any department forward and to hold its rightful place in the delivery of care.
