THEEFFECT OF STERILIZATION ON FLOW TRANSDUCERS

BACKGROUND:The purpose of this study was to compare the observed accuracy of three brandsof flow / volume transducers (BiCore, Bird & Novametrix) and to determineif they would maintain accuracy after ethylene oxide (ETO) sterilization.

Methods: Manufacturersaccuracy ranged from 3% to 15%. We set a clinically acceptible accuracy rangeof ± 10% for uniform consistency in this benchtest. New BiCore (Neonatal VarFlex®Flow Transducer), Bird (Partner® Infant and Pediatric Flow/VolumeSensor) and Novametrix COSMO+ (Neonatal and Pediatric/Adult combined CO flowsensors) were evaluated for accuracy of tidal volume (Vt) delivery using calibratedsyringes. Infant / neonatal flow sensors (all brands) were tested at Vt of 10,20, 30, 40 and 50 cc. Pediatric/adult sensors (Bird and Novametrix) were testedatVt of 50, 200, 400, 700 and 1000 cc. Five different sensors for each brandwere tested new out of the package, and each sensor was evaluated five timesat each Vt. Data were then analyzed as a percentage of error for both new conditionand after each of 5 resterilizations. Error was calculated as the difference(measured value ? true value) expressed as a percentage of the true value. Meanand standard deviation was calculated for errors across all volumes. Error intervalswere calculated as mean error ±2.31xSD (Resp Care 1996; 41:1092-1099) and interpretedas the expected error for 95% of future measurements at the 99% confidence level.

Results: Eachnumber in the table below summarizes 125 volume measurements. Data below arelower (L) and upper (U) error limits expressed as % of true value:

Conclusions: Inthis benchtest, new Bird and Novametrix pediatric/adult probes are within ourpredefined ±19% accuracy range and remain within range for 5 resterilizations.Neonatal probe accuracy is less stable then pediatric probe accuracy. New Novametrixneonatal probes are within our predefined ±10% accuracy range and remain withinrange for 5 resterilizations. New BiCore and Bird neonatalprobes are within our predefined ±10% accuracy range, but fall outside the accuracyrange with the 1st resterilization.
