BENCHTEST OF THE DRAGER EVITA 4 VENTILATOR WITH HELIUM-OXYGEN MIXTURES.

BACKGROUND:We compared the set tidal volumes to the delivered tidal volumes on the DragerEvita 4 ventilator at 21%,30% and 40% Oxygen and Helium mixtures. HeO2 is usedto treat patients with upper airway obstruction by promoting laminar flow pastthe obstruction thus reducing the work of breathing.

Methods: Alltests were performed with the ventilator in the volume CMV mode, adult and pediatricranges, flowsensor turned off and removed, and autoflow off. Volumes and Oxygenconcentration were measured with a Bio-Tek VT-Plus ( Winooski, VT).

Results: Using100% Helium connected to the air inlet of the ventilator, it was found thatthe set and measured tidal volumes were not linear at different HeO2 concentrations.

CONCLUSION: Basedon our limited lab evaluation and clinical experience, we feel that the DragerE4 can be safely used in adult and pediatric modes using volume CMV when theflow monitoring is turned off and the flowsensor removed. We now utilize theabove chart to determine the delivered tidal volume. Further testing will examineSIMV, pressure support and rise time.
