Evaluation of an Educational Program Designed to Assess Knowledge of Ventilator Waveforms

Introduction: Ventilator waveforms have become a part of the patient ventilator assessment. Understanding and interpreting waveforms have been obstacles to incorporating waveforms into patient care assessments. We developed an education program to assess knowledge and increase understanding of waveforms.

Methods: A voluntary, initial survey was sent out by intra-hospital email to all clinical therapists containing demographic information and ten pretest questions consisting of common waveforms. An in-service was performed on two separate occasions followed by a post-test containing the same waveforms. Responses given to the tests were tabulated and average scores were reported.

Results: Mean pretest scores showed 6.7 correct, while mean posttest scores were 9.7 correct. Mean responses were broken down based on credentials, years of experience, and education, and are reported in the table below.

Conclusions: Based on the information obtained through our survey, clinical therapists in our facility were able to demonstrate an improvement in their knowledge of ventilator waveforms after education was provided.
