Background: The Michener Institute is dedicated to the education of Health Care Professionals. The COPD Educator Program was developed in response to a National needs assessment, which identified a need for a training program for Educators working with COPD clients.

Description: The COPD Educator Program was developed with unrestricted educational grants from AstraZeneca , GlaxoSmithKline and Boeringher Ingelheim. The COPD Educator Certificate Program supports principles of adult education. It is self-directed and self-paced with tutor support and includes 4 self-directed learning modules. Each module contains learning objectives, learning activities, workshop preparation activities and assignments. Workshops integrate material from each module and provide participants with the opportunity to develop teaching skills. Certified Multidisciplinary Facilitators direct workshops. Extensive evaluation of Program participants consists of written assignments, workshop presentations and teaching sessions.

Results: The COPD Educator Program addresses the need for formalized training for COPD Educators. The presentation describes the development process, including the Certification of Facilitators and outlines the module components, learning activities, workshops and evaluations. Data presented includes a profile of the National Pilot Program for 2002 - 2003

Discussion and Recommendations: The Michener Institute has developed a Certificate Program in COPD Education to meet the needs of Health Educators. Program evaluation will be conducted throughout the Pilot Program and required adjustments made to ensure standards of care are met. Further evaluation will assess the impact of the Educator Program on the clinical teaching skills of participants.
