ANALYSIS OF RESPIRATORY CARE PRACTITIONERS’ ABSENTEEISM WITH TWO DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT SCHEDULE SYSTEMS: PERMANENT VERSUS INTRAGALE.

Background: Our Respiratory Care Department had a permanent six-week revolving perpetual unchanging schedule. Swaps were allowed with supervision. Last year this system was changed to the Vas Tech 24/7 Intragale interactive computer based system throughout the Nursing and Respiratory Departments. The Vas Tech 24/7 is highly customized to meet the needs of our healthcare facility providing methods to: minimize preparation efforts for Magnet certification and Joint Commission audits through credential tracking and reporting; empower staff members through web-based scheduling, shift bidding or posting and automated shift swapping; avoid agency and overtime costs by using internal resources more effectively with centralized staffing; and optimize daily staffing levels based on fluctuations in census, workload and acuity measures with tools to view staffing levels, denote absences, move staff between assignments and print up to the minute assignment sheets.
Hypothesis: The staff empowerment offered by Intragale would result in decreased absenteeism.
Method: Respiratory care practitioners’ absent hours were counted for two years of the permanent (n = 46) and one year of the interactive Intragale (n = 45) schedules. Comparisons were made between the last two permanent schedule years as a control. This control was compared to the new interactive Intragale schedule.
Results: There was a 0.7% increase in absent hours between the 2-permanent schedule years that preceded Intragale. There was a 34% increase in absent hours between the last year of the permanent and the first year of the Intragale schedules.
Conclusion: Many factors contributed to the increase in absent hours with Intragale: improved reporting accuracy, resistance to change, a small percentage of staff changing from 8 to 12 hour shifts and alterations made to the staff generated schedules in the production phase of the Intragale schedule.
